Why is it crucial for society to prioritise mental health and promote awareness about its significance in our daily lives?
Mental health awareness is crucial as it reduces stigma, encourages open conversations, and promotes early intervention. By fostering understanding, it aids individuals in seeking help when needed, leading to better overall well-being and reducing the impact of mental health challenges on individuals, families, and society as a whole.
We met with Chris Houston, ex-professional sportsman and now facilitator and training manager at Mental Health Movement. Chris played in the NRL for 10 years before moving overseas to play in the English Super League. Throughout this period, Chris faced many challenges and learned to overcome them through his personal resilience, developing coping strategies, and leaning on his support networks.
Prioritising your mental health is the key to living a happier, healthier, and more balanced life, and here are five reasons why one should take into consideration one’s mental health:
- Overall well-being: Mental health is a fundamental component of overall well-being. Just as we take care of our physical health to feel good and function optimally, attending to our mental health is equally important for a sense of fulfillment, happiness, and life satisfaction.
- Productivity and functionality: Good mental health is associated with improved cognitive function, productivity, and decision-making. When your mental health is stable, you are more likely to excel in your personal and professional life and handle daily challenges effectively.
- Relationships: Mental health affects your interactions with others. It plays a significant role in maintaining healthy relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Taking care of your mental health can help you communicate better, manage conflicts, and build meaningful connections. It is also important to continue these relationships and lean on people when you are in need.
- Coping with stress: Life is filled with stressors, and good mental health equips you with the resilience and coping skills needed to navigate these challenges effectively. Prioritising your mental health helps you handle stressors with greater ease and reduces the risk of developing stress-related conditions.
- Quality of life: Mental health contributes to your overall quality of life. A positive mental state enhances your enjoyment of life, helping you savor experiences, pursue your passions, and find fulfillment in your pursuits.
